How does holistic management work?

Holistic Management™ provides a process for making wise management decisions. The process begins with the recognition that all systems are part of a whole and all wholes are part of an even larger system. The first step is defining the whole under management-drawing a mental membrane around the management team's sphere of influence-while keeping in mind that whole's role in larger communities and it's hosting of smaller communities-and realizing that every action taken affects all these communities, whether or not that effect is noticeable by humans.

The management team identifies its common values, defines a holistic goal for the desired quality of life, the forms of production that will generate the needed resources for that quality of life, and the future resource base for which to aim. Management choices are run through a decision making model that weighs the usefulness of each proposed action or "tool" in relation to its effectiveness in moving toward each of the aspects in the goal. A plan is formed and executed, then results are carefully monitored to see if we are progressing toward the desired result. The system is corrected as necessary to achieve the results desired.

While originally conceived as habitat management for profit, holistic management has proven useful in a wide range of situations where economic and/or ecologic sustainability is desired. Increasing profit margins while healing the ecosystem and improving quality of life for the practitioner means landowners are more likely to stay on the land, avoiding the fragmentation that is wreaking havoc with populations of plants and wildlife all over Texas.
