Long ago in a faraway land...

...a wise being watched great herds of hoofed animals as they moved across the ground. He noticed how they stopped for a while to bite the nutritious grasses and to give back to them with fertilizer and liquid nourishment. Predators arrived for the chase and the hooves of the densely packed herd began to churn, pruning the old stems and the roots of the grasses as they tilled and seeded the soil. As quickly as it came, the great herd was gone — off to the next fresh spot along their territorial tour. The grazed spot, dazed and beaten, gained strength from the experience and came back stronger than ever. And the cycle continued in its symbiotic partnership evolved and evolving through the ages.

But when humans stepped in and began to attempt control of natural processes, things began to go awry. By discovering the use of ever more destructive tools, man burned plants and killed animals to mold the environment to his comfort. The decisions to make these alterations were made without concern for side or future effects. People, alas, were generally poor decision makers.

Long ago was the 1950’s and the land, then called Rhodesia, is now Zimbabwe. The wise man’s name is Allan Savory. With a great talent for observation and an ever-questioning mind undeterred by criticism, Savory sought to find a way to halt the destruction of land and wildlife he saw happening everywhere. In an attempt to recreate nature’s way of moving great herds, he developed the Savory Cell Grazing system, then revised, refined and expanded his observations and insights until a new paradigm for all types of management was formed — a new way to look at the way we make decisions and how those decisions affect the whole. He called this new thought model Holistic Resource Management.

Holistic Resource Management of Texas, Inc. grew out of Savory’s new model, beginning in 1986 with Texans looking for ways to make their resources more sustainable for future generations and increase profits enough to stay in business as they made their land more productive. What they found was not a recipe for successful land management, but a process to discover what is of value to each management team and how to create a custom roadmap toward that vision. Today HRM of TX is a strong and active nonprofit seeking a variety of ways to encourage and support the practice of holistic management in Texas.
